Mushroom Vase

To showcase the theme of Sustainability, I have made a large ceramic vase with a generally asymmetrical form, complete with mushrooming protrusions. Its organic unity, coupled with its purpose of displaying flowers, dovetails with the overarching theme. In addition, I have made use of mushrooms as visual symbols that represent sustenance and preservation. Mushrooms obtain food by processing dead and decaying matter, relying on readily available resources. Plus, they provide the living plants and trees around them with nutrients, continuing life beyond their own. In this way, mushrooms illustrate the ultimate goal at the heart of Sustainability: to fulfil mankind’s physical and social needs by making prudent use of earthly resources and, more importantly, to safeguard these very resources for the sake of posterity.
